Decisions, Decisions, Decisions .........

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions .........

With almost five months of intense wedding planning under my belt, I’ve come to realize that there are a few things that a bride ought to keep in mind:

1.       Make sure that your ceremony and reception represent you and your fiancée.

I have looked through countless magazines, wedding blogs, online resources, etc. trying to find exactly what I wanted for my wedding. What colors do I want? What should my centerpieces be like? Should I have a theme? And what I realized is that I needed to stay within the realm of what would best represent my fiancée and myself. At first, I started with a couple different color choices and I ended up changing them quite a few times before I had to tell myself STOP! I went to my fiancée and told him that I really wanted to have purple as one of our wedding colors. I then proceeded to ask him if he wanted a certain color as well. HIS ANSWER: Black. So as a result, our colors are now purple and black: very elegant, and classic. I’ve continued to do this with several other things: finding a wonderful photographer who will capture both of us and our love for each other (ie. Denise Birdsong Photography), incorporating books into our centerpieces because we both love to read, simple, elegant invitations, etc.

2.       Not everything is going to turn out like you think it will.

Perfect example of this is my wedding dress. I ordered THE dress one week after Josh proposed. It was supposed to be here the week of February 14, 2011. Long story short is they had to push back the date and it seems that I wouldn’t be getting my dress till sometime in June. So now I have to wait and see if they can get me my dress sooner, by securing another dress from a different shipment. But it’s okay! Things happen, and I’ve learned that I can’t stress out about them. My mother keeps telling me that the more problems I have now, the smoother my wedding will be. Let’s hope so!

3.       Don’t jump the gun and try to force something. Take your time.

I was lucky enough to find a venue that includes everything in my package, wedding invitations, music, flowers, food, etc. Wedgewood Banquets is an amazing company. With 12 different locations in California, it is a perfect option for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money and time planning their wedding.  After going online to review the invitations I didn’t find anything I liked. So I ended up going to a friend of our family, who scrapbooks for a living, and asked her to create something for me. After she had created a couple different samples, I was all ready to pick something, but she informed me that it would cost a lot more money than I thought it would be. I emailed my venue and asked how much I would get back if I chose to not to got thought them. Long story short, there was no way the money we would get back would cover the cost of the new invitations. She suggested I come in to see the invitations in person. I did, and they had doubled the options they did online. I found my invites!

4.       Make sure to find time to distress!!!!!

I can’t emphasize this enough. The most important thing that I have done since I’ve started my planning process has been doing yoga and running. This has helped me relieve stress while still getting in shape for my wedding ! Otherwise, I end up taking my frustrations out on my fiancée, which causes stupid fights about random things. Don’t over stress, things will get done! And make sure to let others help you. This leads me to my fifth and final point:

5.       Don’t think you have to do everything yourself.

I have to admit, this was my biggest problem. I found that I was trying to cover all of my bases myself. It’s okay to let others help you! If fact that is what they are there for. Let your mom and sisters take care of the bridal shower, let your bridesmaids take over bridesmaid dress planning. Have people come with you to your appointments, so they can help you keep a schedule!

Remember that wedding planning is supposed to be fun. I have to remind myself of that every day. It takes a little time

and patience, but in the end, everything will turn out beautiful!
